The science

Bone isn't fixed. It remodels. Old bone is broken down and replaced throughout adult life, and mechanical load helps steer where that happens.

  1. Sense

    Osteocytes inside bone detect mechanical strain.

  2. Signal

    The RANKL/OPG balance switches bone-clearing cells on or off.

  3. Resorb

    Osteoclasts break down old or unneeded bone.

  4. Rebuild

    Osteoblasts lay down new bone in its place.
